Essay Writing Competition

The Student Activities and Development Section of Department of English Language (DEL) is pleased to organise an essay writing competition in conjunction with Malaysia’s 61st National Day Celebration.

Below are the details of the competition:

• Theme: Suitable with the celebration of the 61st Malaysia Independence Day
• Date: 13 - 26 September 2018
• Length: 350 - 500 words
• Language: English language
• Type of essay: Descriptive
• Format: 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced with one-inch margins on all side.

Objectives:

1. To encourage students to become proficient in English language and to improve students’ confidence in English. 
2. To foster the spirit of patriotism in line with the celebration of Malaysia’s 61st National Day Celebration. 
3. To assist in improving critical thinking skills among UMP students.

Competition rules are as follow:

1. Students are expected to write descriptive essay of 350 to 500 words.
2. The theme and topic of the essay must be suitable with the celebration of the 61st Malaysia Independence Day.
3. Entries will be evaluated on grammar, spelling, usage and syntax, clarity, structure, overall appearance, and strength of writing.
4. The essay should be 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced on 8 ½ x 11 inch paper with one-inch margins on all side. Essays must be submitted as two attachments, one in Microsoft Word and one in PDF format. Please do not use author’s name when saving the file.
5. Essay must be the original work of a single author.
6. No plagiarism: your final piece should be unique and written all by yourself.
7. No person may submit more than one entries. 
8. Language: English language
9. The judges reserve the right not to award any prizes and to reject any or all submissions. 
10. Essay must be submitted to delstudents.editor@gmail.com using the subject line “Essay Competition,” by midnight on 26 September 2018. 
11. Please provide your name, student ID and your faculty at the bottom of your essay.
12. Participation is free and certificates will be given to the winners and other participants.
13. Prizes are as follows: 
• First Place: RM100
• Second Place: RM70
• Third Place: RM50 and 
• 5 Consolation Prizes: RM10
